Knowing the water filtration terminology will help you understand what a particular water filtration treatment system is offering.
Following are a few explanations:
- Micron Rating: the size of the particulates the filter can remove
- Media/Resin: what they are filling the tank with, for example Carbon and KDF55*
- GPM (Gallons per minute): the amount of water flowing through your pipes per minute
- PSI (pounds per square inch): measure of water pressure
- NPT: National Pipe Thread
- MPT: Male Pipe Thread
- FPT: Female Pipe Thread
- VOCs: volatile organic contaminants
- SOCs: synthetic organic chemicals
- Yoke: Yokes are needed to connect a control valve to your plumbing
- Ionic Exchange: the only way to remove minerals from your water is with an Ionic Exchange Resin and this process requires an injection of sodium or potassium – an exchanges minerals out and sodium in
- Acidic Water low pH, a neutral pH is between 6.8 to 7.2. Above 7.2 is basic and below 6.8 is acidic. Acidic water must be treated or it will create major issues with plumbing. You do not want to drink acidic water.
- Heavy Metals: lead, mercury, copper, nickel and chromium
- THMs - Trihalomethanes. When chlorine is combined with organic chemicals, it creates toxic pollutants known as THMs, which are known carcinogens. Present in all treatment plant treated water.
